Carleton College Invites Public to “10 x 16: Snapshots of a Fulbrighter’s Sojourn in the People’s Republic of China”

Harry McKinley Williams, the Laird Bell Professor of History at Carleton College, will deliver a multimedia retrospective chronicling his recent ten-month Fulbright Lectureship in China on Tuesday, Apr. 23. Williams’ presentation, entitled “10x6: Snapshots of a Fulbrighter’s Sojourn in the People’s Republic of China,” will feature ten selected samples of the tens of thousands of photographs he took during his time in China. This special evening begins with a Chinese green tea and cookies reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by Williams’ presentation at 7 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema. This event is free and open to the public.

During his time in China, Professor Williams taught American and African American history to Chinese graduate and undergraduate students, as well as serving as a curriculum and thesis advisor and conducting tutorials and informal meetings related to the United States and the African American experience. Williams, who previously worked as a journalist and a professor of writing, came to Carleton College’s department of history in 1989 to take a newly created position in African American history. Besides his two-term survey of African American history, Williams’s work touches on such subjects as the historiography of slavery, the civil rights movement and the Black Power movement. Williams also teaches a two-term seminar, "History, Memory, and the Atlantic World: Ghana and the United States," which includes a winter break trip to Ghana.
