Cannon River Swells with Early Morning Rainfall

The river through downtown Northfield quickly rose several feet after more than four inches of rain fell during the morning hours.

The Cannon River through downtown Northfield quickly rose several feet Saturday because of heavy rain earlier in the day.

At about 10:30 a.m., the water level in Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza touched the concrete steps of the river viewing area, which is much higher than usual.

The swollen river was littered with tree trunks and limbs, as well as other debris, as it made its way through Riverside Park toward the Ames Mill Dam.

As to be expected, the water flow over the dam became a spectacle, as folks lined the railing to watch the rushing water.
