Editor's note: Submitted by the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee, responsible for the annual Winter Walk event on Dec. 6, is asking all of Northfield to help light up the town.
“One big change we’d like to implement this year is to provide luminarias throughout almost the entire downtown area—Division Street, Bridge Square and more on Water Street, the Fourth- and Fifth-street bridges,” said Mary Schmelzer, executive director of the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce. “We also want to let folks know that we will be closing Division from Second to Seventh Street this year, rather than ending at Sixth Street.”
With a larger event area, Schmelzer said more luminarias will be needed.
“That is why there is a general call to all downtown businesses and organizations to give a little more than you did last year, and if you never have, to consider helping this year," she said.
For the 14th Annual Winter Walk there will be a few exciting additions to the much anticipated seasonal event.
Nonprofit organizations, musical and choral talent, street safety, arts groups, sports associations are all a key part of the event and their participation makes Winter Walk a true community celebration. Also this year ‘non-downtown’ businesses are encouraged to take part by displaying on Division Street. Two of this year’s key sponsors are Apple Chevrolet Buick and Edina Realty who will sponsor carriage rides. Xcel Energy is proud to be the major sponsor for the opening Winter Walk ceremony.
It isn’t apparent to outsiders the hours, coordination, supplies and scheduling that are involved in putting on this seasonal celebration.
“It takes a lot of time and a considerable investment to make such a beautiful event seem completely effortless,” said Schmelzer. "By contributing and helping 'light our fire,' we will all make Northfield a bright winter wonderland for all to enjoy.”
