UPDATED: Taste of Northfield Postponed; Areas of Northfield Flooded

A flash flood warning has been issued for Rice County until 10 p.m. 

According to the Weather Database, 3.77 inches of rain has fallen through 6:05 p.m. Rain is expected throughout the evening and into Friday morning.

UPDATED: 5 p.m.

Power has been restored to 63 customers on the city's west side. Four customers are still without power.

There are reports of more than 2 inches of rain falling already on Thursday. Rain is expected throughout the night and early Friday with the possibility of severe weather.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday.

The Taste of Northfield will not happen today.

UPDATED: 3:45 p.m.

At least 64 Xcel Energy customers are without power, according to the company. Xcel says power should be restored to the customers, which are north of Highway 19 and west of Highway 3, by 5:30 p.m.

The thunderstorm warning expired at 3:45 p.m. A thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 10 p.m.

Other tidbits via scanner traffic between emergecy officials:

  • A tree is also down at Ninth Street and Water Street.
  • A manhole cover is off at Fourth Street and Division Street.

RICE COUNTY IN SOUTH CENTRAL MINNESOTA... * UNTIL 315 PM CDT * AT 226 PM CDT...RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM...CAPABLE OF PRODUCING QUARTER SIZE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS OF 60 MPH. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR KILKENNY...OR ABOUT 12 MILES WEST OF FARIBAULT...AND MOVING EAST AT 45 MPH. LOCATIONS IN THE WARNING INCLUDE... FARIBAULT... KILKENNY... MONTGOMERY... LONSDALE... The weather gods are clearly messing with us today, but we're still on for the Taste tonight. However, we're watching the radar closely and will take severe weather into account. These pesky cells are popping up out of thin air!

AT 1145 AM CDT...WEATHER SERVICE RADAR WAS TRACKING A STRONG THUNDERSTORM 4 MILES NORTHWEST OF GREEN ISLE. THIS STORM WAS MOVING NORTHEAST AT 40 MPH. OTHER STORMS WERE LOCATED ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE METRO AREA...FROM NEAR BELLE PLAINE TO FARIBAULT. HAIL UP TO DIME SIZE AND WINDS UP TO 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH THIS STORM. THE STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP MAINLY OVER THE SOUTHERN METRO INTO EARLY AFTERNOON. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... SEEK SHELTER AND STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS UNTIL THE STORMS HAS PASSED. THESE THUNDERSTORMS COULD INTENSIFY QUICKLY...SO BE READY TO ACT IF A WARNING IS ISSUED.

Some possibly nasty weather is on its way to Northfield and Rice County.

Strong storms are moving across central Minnesota with stronger portions of the storm producing up to 1-inch hail, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS is reporting that damaging straight line winds are possible and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

The severity of the storms will increase this afternoon and into the evening, the NWS reports.

According to the NWS:

THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE MOVING ACROSS CENTRAL MINNESOTA AND WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN THIS MORNING. THE STRONGEST OF THESE STORMS WILL PRODUCE HAIL UP TO ONE INCH ALONG WITH HEAVY DOWNPOURS AND A LOT OF PEA SIZE HAIL. MOST OF THESE STORMS WILL BE WEAK. THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT INCREASES THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING WHEN A WARM FRONT LIFTS NORTH AND ADDS WARM AND MOISTURE TO THE ATMOSPHERE. THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. HAIL...DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WINDS...AND EVEN A COUPLE TORNADOES CAN NOT BE RULED OUT TODAY. THE BEST TORNADO THREAT IS CONCENTRATED IN EAST CENTRAL MINNESOTA AND WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN. THIS INCLUDES THE TWIN CITIES METRO AREA. THE HAIL AND WIND THREAT IS EXPECTED OVER A MUCH LARGER PORTION OF MINNESOTA AND WESTERN WISCONSIN. THE FAVORABLE TIMING FOR SEVERE WEATHER IS BETWEEN 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON AND 9 PM THIS EVENING.

AT 1017 AM CDT...WEATHER SERVICE RADAR WAS TRACKING AN LARGE CLUSTER OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS OVER PARTS OF SOUTH CENTRAL AND EAST CENTRAL MINNESOTA. THE STRONGEST STORM WAS LOCATED JUST SOUTH OF GAYLORD AND JUST EAST OF LAFAYETTE. THE STORMS WERE MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 20 MPH. HAIL UP TO NICKEL SIZE AND WINDS UP TO 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH THE STRONGER STORMS.
