Safety Center Discussion Tonight at the Council Work Session

What's on the Council work session tonight: Safety Center, rural fire association relationship, downtown parking, and TIF district projects

“Safety Center Policy Decisions” is first on Tuesday’s worksession agenda  (You can watch all Council meetings and work sessions via KYMN either the live stream or later at your convenience).

The staff memo highlights three decisions to make related to the Safety Center:

1. Reconfirm the joint Public Safety Center (PSC) Project
2. Choose a site for the PSC

3. Establish a budget and financing for the PSC project

This is a worksession, so we will not take action on any of these, but continue to discuss them further.  I've written more about the Safety Center on my blog betseybuckheit.com

Also on the agenda: downtown parking and an update on the Master Development District #4 - often called the downtown TIF district which expires at the end of 2013.   As many of you probably know from personal experience, parking downtown near the is often scarce.  The Council will discuss how to address this issue in both the short and long term with representatives of the NDDC.  The discussion (and action) are long overdue, since parking was one of the reasons for creating the TIF district in 1986. Northfield does not require downtown property owners to provide parking (as we do in all other zoning districts) so we need to work with business owners and determine how to provide common parking space as cost-effectively as possible.
