Celebrate Dundas

To all who are looking for a good way to spend the last weekend in June, look no further. The Dundas Historical Society is pleased to present the fifth annual Celebrate Dundas community festival, set for Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30. The family-friendly event will celebrate Dundas’ storied history and offer a range of activities for people of all ages.

Michelle Millenacker, president of the Dundas Historical Society and chair of the Celebrate Dundas event, says, “We’ve got a lot on lined up for our celebration this year and we’re really looking forward to seeing people flock to our downtown for the events. In the past, our weather has been all over the map – two years ago, temperatures topped 90 degrees and last year we saw short rainstorm delay some of the late-morning activities. Rain or shine the celebration will go on as planned!”

With the schedule continuing to grow, this year’s Celebrate Dundas festival will feature many of the favorite activities from years past, as well as some new attractions, all designed to bring area residents together to nurture friendships and strengthen the community. The celebration will officially kick off on Friday night with a Dundas Dukes baseball clinic for kids at 5:30 p.m. and a Dukes baseball game against the Elko Express at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s events begin at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast and the Dog Dash 5K Fun Run and continue throughout the day. The event will wrap up at Dawn’s Corner Bar with a street dance, featuring the 8th Street Band, beginning at 8 p.m.

To showcase some of the key elements in Dundas’ history, the Historical Society will sponsor a one-day museum complete with stories and artifacts. Live music will be on stage at the center of town beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with a line-up of: Chance MeetingsMartin Anderson and the GoodsMark Cameron Band and All Jampt Up. Other events on tap for the weekend include a children’s carnival, safety exhibit (featuring helicopters, a police car, an ambulance, and a fire truck), family bike ride, bike decorating contest, car show, dog activities, farmer’s market, ArtOrg steamroller printmaking and much more.

Millenacker continues, “We’ve had a lot of volunteers step up to the plate and offer to coordinate various pieces of the celebration. Truly, everything we have planned is a result of the extraordinary efforts of our residents wanting to create the very best event possible for the community.”

Millenacker made a point to note that one of the events that has expanded significantly this year is the car show. She estimates it will be a big draw for families and collectors alike, especially if the weather is favorable. “We anticipate 200 classic cars will line Railway Street,” says Millenacker. “In addition, we’ve received word that 20 or more Model T cars will gather at the old mill site. This is no doubt an event that will impress attendees and has the potential for significant growth in the years to come.”

In addition to planning the event, the Celebrate Dundas committee is charged with securing funding from local businesses and individuals to support the event. The goal is to privately fund the entire celebration and to grow a financial base that will support the expansion of the festival in years to come.
