Weather Update: Ice Causes Major Issues, Downed Trees in Lakeville

Glaze ice that formed overnight as rain fell across the Twin Cities last night is causing power outages and massive travel headaches.

If you've made it to work then you know the roads are treacherous.

If you're still home, you may not have power.

If you're a student, you know are delayed two hours.

The massive winter storm that brought copious amounts of rain to Lakeville isn't over—another inch or two of slushy snow is expected to fall now that temperatures have fallen some, but a lot of damage has been done.

Dakota Electric says around , and as of 6 a.m., the Minnesota State Patrol reported the slowest commute of the winter thanks to icy roads which caused 84 crashes on state highways—71 in the metro area. Just before 9 a.m. there were still massive delays on most of the freeways and highways around the Twin Cities.

In addition, all around Lakeville, the weight of the ice has broken tree limbs and in some cases, brought entire trees down.

Lakeville's Public Works Director Chris Petree said he's aware of some downed trees and limbs, but at this time, the city isn't likely to clear away the damage since little if any of the debris is in public areas.

Beyond tree damage, Petree said the snow and slush cleanup has been "fairly routine." He said side streets should be clear by this afternoon.

Meanwhile, to the north, where more than 12 inches of snow has fallen, the Minnesota Department of Transportation urged motorists not to travel on Hwy. 10 north of St. Cloud, Hwy. 169 and I-35 north of the Twin Cities, and Hwy. 71 north of Sauk Centre.
