Tree in Bridge Square Dedicated to ‘Mr. Northfield’

Friends of the late Dan Freeman gathered in Bridge Square on Friday afternoon to remember the Northfield legend.

Dan Freeman’s moniker now is a prominent part of Bridge Square.

A couple dozen of Dan Freeman’s friends gathered Friday in the downtown Northfield park Friday afternoon to dedicate a tree in his memory.

A marker near the base of the New Harmory elm is a plaque that says simply, “Dan Freeman ‘Mr. Northfield' 2013.”

Freeman—a Northfield legend who was active in the city’s media, theater, philanthropic and business communities—died at the age of 72 on May 6.

Friday’s 10-minute ceremony featured remarks from Hayes Scriven, executive director of the Northfield Historical Society, and Suzanne Freeman, Freeman’s daughter.

“Dan was a piece of what makes Northfield great,” said Scriven.
