Fog, Then Potential for Severe Storms

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for central and southern Minnesota.

The good news is that the rain stopped in Northfield on Tuesday afternoon.

The bad news is more rain—as well as severe weather—could be on our way on Wednesday.

The hazard facing the area Tuesday night and early Wednesday could be fog, according to the outlook.

However, rain and severe storms have raised concerns for Wednesday through Saturday.

Here is the text of the weather outlook:

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA...AND WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT
AREAS OF FOG...POSSIBLY DENSE...ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP TONIGHT.VISIBILITIES MAY BE REDUCED TO AROUND ONE QUARTER MILE ACROSS THE OUTLOOK AREA NEAR SUNRISE WEDNESDAY.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY
THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. AT THIS TIME...THERE APPEARS TO BE A RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA ON WEDNESDAY. ON THURSDAY...THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WILL THEN SHIFT TO INCLUDE MAINLY SOUTH CENTRAL AND EAST CENTRAL MINNESOTA AND WESTERN WISCONSIN. THE PRIMARY THREATS ON BOTH WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY WOULD BE LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING

WINDS...ALTHOUGH TORNADIC STORMS APPEAR POSSIBLE AS WELL. THE THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS WILL BE LOW FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY.

EXCESSIVE RAINFALL WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE WITH THE STORMS WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT. THIS COULD RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT RISES ON AREA STREAMS AND RIVERS.

Here is the weather service’s forecast for the next few days:

Wednesday—Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1pm. Areas of fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Southeast wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night—Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. South southeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday—Showers and thunderstorms likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. South wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday Night—Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. South southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday—A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph.

Friday Night—A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph
