Brett Reese Named 2011 Joseph Lee Heywood Award Winner

The award has been handed out for service to the community since 1983.

In being named the 2011 Joseph Lee Heywood Distinguished Service Award winner on Thursday, Brett Reese was humbled.

"I've been blessed with a lot of great people," Reese told the small crowd on hand for the announcement at J. Grundy's Rueb 'N' Stein. "Northfield is a great town."

Each year, a Northfield resident is selected for his or her service to the community. Heywood was killed while defending the old First National Bank during the robbery attempt by Jesse James and his gang in 1876.

Reese, 52, has been involved in many organizations, including the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation, Northfield Enterprise Center, Prairie Creek Community School, Rotary Club of Northfield, Northfield Historical Society and the Northfield Hospital.

Since 1983, the Heywood Award committee has honored a Northfield resident to “remind us of our past and our promise to improve our community for the future," according to the DJJD website.

Reese will be honored in September at the annual banquet.

Jeanne Schnobrich, event chair, said Reese will be kept busy until then.

"We'll be in touch," she said, drawing laughter from the group.
