Portion of Division Street Reopens to Traffic

Division Street between Fifth and Seventh streets had been closed to thru traffic because of the Sixth Street reconstruction project.

Traffic in downtown Northfield has taken a great stride toward normalcy with the reopening of Division Street between Fifth and Seventh streets.

For much of this summer, the two-block section of the city's main street has been closed to thru traffic because of the Sixth Street reconstruction project. That means the intersection of Sixth and Division streets had been in a state of rebuilding for several weeks.

Drivers relied on Water and Washington streets to bypass the construction.

Now, the intersection of Division and Sixth has a new look, with brick paver crosswalks similar to those at the intersections of Fifth Street and Division, Fourth and Division and Water Street and Fifth.

Work on the pavers wrapped up early this week.

On Wednesday afternoon, crews poured the first layer of asphalt on Sixth Street on both sides Division, between Water and Division and between Division and Washington.

Although Division Street now is open, "Road Closed" signs remain in place on Sixth Street. The section Sixth between Water and Division still is closed to all traffic, and Sixth between Washington and Division is open only to customers heading to the First National Bank of Northfield drive-up window.

The Sixth Street entrance to Econofoods also was closed as of mid-day Thursday.
