Benefit Breakfast for Flood Victim is Aug. 4 at Northfield VFW

Travis Smith's home in Dundas was destroyed in the July 13 flooding.

A benefit breakfast for Travis Smith, whose home was destroyed in the July 13 flooding in Dundas, is planned for 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Northfield VFW.

Smith's homeowners insurance did not cover flooding and the home was a total loss, says a letter written by Smith's mother, Renee Long, that appeared recently in the Northfield News.

A fundraising page has been established for Smith on giveforward.com. His page is called the "Travis Smith Flash Flood Fund."

As of Wednesday afternoon, 13 donations for a total of $1,060 had been collected.

Here is text that accompanies the fundraising page:

Saturday morning Travis was awakened by the noise of his basement walls caving in from the pressure of several feet of flash flood waters.

"From a dead sleep to being out on the street watching everything I have being flooded was about 10 minutes,” Travis was quoted as saying by the news media. Travis and his friend and roommate Neil lost everything but their lives Saturday morning when a flash flood deposited over five feet of water in the yard caving in the basement walls, flooding the basement and first floor of the house. Tapped by the rising flood waters they were evacuated from the flooded house by the fire department. The sudden flash flood came from an estimated eight inches rain run off with no warning. Travis has worked very hard over the last few years to remodel his first home while finding time to also work on his friends homes, now he needs our help to replace and rebuild what he lost in minutes.
