Washington Post: Second Congressional District "Surprisingly Competitive"

The fate of the U.S. House of Representatives rests on a few battleground districts, including Minnesota's Second Congressional District, according to the Post.

Rep. John Kline's (R) race against Democratic challenger Mike Obermueller has caught the eye of the Washington Post. Minnesota's Second Congressional District may be "surprisingly competitive" this year, according to a May 11 article in the Post highlighting battleground districts across the country. Kline "drew the short straw" in redistricting, the Post said, and faces tighter re-election chances. The Post also cited the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's decision to provide support to Obermueller through its Red to Blue Emerging Races program as a factor. Kline, a five-term incumbent, has for years won re-election by double-digit margins in the congressional district. Follow Northfield Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook…

UPDATED: Dahle, Bly Endorsed by Senate District 20 DFLers

DFLers Kevin Dahle and David Bly will face Republicans Michael Dudley and Brian Wermerskirchen for seats in the Senate and House, respectively.

UPDATED: 12:06 a.m. Wednesday Former state senator Kevin Dahle was endorsed as the DFL Senate District 20 candidate on Tuesday at the party's endorsing convention in Montgomery. Dahle, a teacher at Northfield High School, will face New Prague's Michael Dudley, who was endorsed last month by Republicans. "While I reaffirm my commitment to the party, I pledge to do my best to represent all Minnesotans, Republicans and Democrats, Independents, and others. When we stop working together, our Legislature becomes a haven for special interests and personal agendas," Dahle said, according to a press release from SD20DFL. Dahle was unopposed and received the endorsement unanimously. Redistricting moved Northfield from District 25 to District 20 for …

Ganey Concedes, DFLer Mike Obermueller to Face John Kline for Congress Seat

Ahead of the fourth ballot, Northfield's Patrick Ganey conceded to Eagan's Mike Obermueller for the DFL endorsement for Minnesota's Second Congressional District. Obermueller will face Lakeville's John Kline, a five-term Republican incumbent.

And then there was one. Eagan's Mike Obermueller, a former state representative, was endorsed as the Second Congressional District's DFL candidate on Saturday at Rosemount High School after Northfield's Patrick Ganey conceded before the fourth ballot. Obermueller, who then received unanimous support, will face Republican John Kline, a five-term incumbent from Lakeville. Kathleen Gaylord, Dakota County commissioner and former mayor of South St. Paul, conceded earlier in the contest.  For a full recap of the event, read our live blog above. _________ Second Congressional District DFLers gather at Rosemount High School today to select their nominee to challenge Republican incumbent John Kline in the November elections. Dundas Woman Chosen for Republican National Convention

Tiana Wells, a Dundas woman whose son attends Bridgewater Elementary, has been selected as an alternate delegate for August's Republican National Convention.

Tiana Wells says she wanted a good future for her 10-year-old son Logan. So the 36-year-old Dundas woman started attending local political meetings four years ago. Then she went to district meetings. Then state meetings. And she became more vocal along the way. Now she’s one of three alternate delegates for the Second Congressional District Republican Party and heads to Tampa Bay, FL, in August to be part of the discussion to select a Republican presidential nominee. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience,” she told Patch this week. “I can’t wait to come back and teach my son. I want him to know that I started out attending meetings at the local level talking, reading, researching. All it took was for me to say, ‘I’m not happy. I have to …

DFL Endorsement for Second Congressional District to Be Decided Saturday

Second Congressional District DFLers will gather at Rosemount High School on Saturday to select their nominee to challenge Republican incumbent John Kline in the November elections.

Second Congressional District DFLers will gather at Rosemount High School on Saturday to select their nominee to challenge Republican incumbent John Kline in the November elections. Kline received the unanimous endorsement from Republicans at the GOP convention at Shakopee Junior High School last week. But thanks to February's court-panel redistricting of Minnesota, Kline faces a tougher road in a second district that now includes DFL-leaning portions of northern Dakota County, as well as southern Washington County, and doesn't include Republican strongholds such as Carver County. Candidates for this Saturday's DFL endorsement include Patrick Ganey, a member of the Northfield City Council, Kathleen Gaylord, a Dakota County commissioner and…

Kline Gets GOP Nod, Expects Fierce Race

Congressman John Kline received the unanimous endorsement of Second District Republicans on Saturday, and now expects a fierce fight in the newly redrawn district he's represented for a decade.

U.S. Congressman John Kline, (R-Second District) of Lakeville, received the unanimous endorsement from Republicans at the GOP convention at Shakopee Junior High School last week, and is now preparing for what could shape up to be his fiercest election battle in years as he seeks a sixth term. Thanks to February's court-panel redistricting, Kline faces a tougher road in a second district which now includes DFL-leaning portions of northern Dakota County, as well as southern Washington County, and doesn't include Republican strongholds such as Carver County. It's also attracted what some consider to be more viable Democratic challengers who would otherwise stay out of the race since the old district leaned so far to the Republican Party. …

LIVE: MPR Hosts Second District DFL Candidate Forum at Noon

Second District Democrats will endorse a candidate to take on five-term incumbent U.S. Congressman John Kline, (R-Second District) of Lakeville, on Saturday, but before then, the three candidates are looking to engage with voters via forums before the convention. Such as an on-line forum hosted by Minnesota Public Radio at noon today. Northfield City Councilor Patrick Ganey, Dakota County Commissioner Kathleen Gaylord and former state representative Mike Obermueller will each participate in the MPR forum where they'll field questions and talk about their visions for the Second District, which became a little more competitive after February's redistricting that brought in DFL-leaning portions of northern Dakota County into the district. The…

John Kline: High Gas Prices Stalling an Already Struggling Economy

As employers strive to grow their businesses and invest in our economy, and American families work to make ends meet, they shouldn’t have to contend with rising gas prices.

Another month of positive job gains is welcome news for the nation’s workers, but the reason unemployment has remained above 8 percent for more than three years is because Washington won’t get out of the way of small businesses and private sector job creators – which are the true engines of our economy. As employers strive to grow their businesses and invest in our economy, and American families work to make ends meet, they shouldn’t have to contend with rising gas prices. The pain of these prices affect more than our ability to fill our gas tanks. High gas prices drive up the cost of everything from food to clothing, and stall an already struggling economy. In campaign speeches, the President insists he supports our ‘All of the Above’ …

Field Still Unclear for Northfield Legislative Races

Only three out of eight candidates have been decided for Northfield's Legislative races.

Republicans for the newly formed District 58, which includes the Dakota County precinct of Northfield, are all set for the November election.  The newly renamed District 58 for the next election cycle—currently District 36—held its endorsing convention on March 31, and incumbents State Sen. Dave Thompson and Rep. Pat Garofalo—running in District 58B—were each endorsed without opposition. It's a little less clear for Democrats. The party held its convention on March 10, but didn't find candidates to face Thompson for the Senate seat, or Garofalo for the House 58B seat. On Thursday, Jim Arlt, a former Northfield police officer, was endorsed as the DFL candidate for House District 58B. Steve Quist, the DFL Senate District 58 chairperson who …
