The community had 70 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in the 2012 election.
Northfield's voter turnout in the 2012 election was higher than the national average, but lagged behind state and county figures. Minnesota fell to third in the country—behind only Mississippi and Wisconsin, according to data the U.S. Census Bureau made public Wednesday evening. Although it had the highest levels in the country of voter turnout in the 2008 election, the 73.2 percent of citizens who voted here in 2012 is still comfortably above the national average of 61.8. (The Census Bureau’s rates are different from those from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office, which lists a 76.11 percent voter turnout rate. The Census Bureau’s rate for Minnesota is listed as having a margin of error of ± 2.1 percent.) The Census Bureau didn’t …

Though it may not feel like it, we're only six weeks removed from the 2012 election. It's OK, you can check the calendar. On election day, students from visiting assistant professor Henriet Hendriks' St. Olaf College political science class conducted exit polling throughout the Second Congressional District, which contains all of Rice, Carver, Scott, Goodhue and Le Sueur counties, as well as most of Dakota and Washington counties. This week, Hendricks' class finished analyzing the more than 500 responses from Rice, Dakota and Scott counties, which asked respondents how they voted for the presidential race, the Second Congressional District 2 race and the proposed constitutional amendments on marriage and voter ID. There were also several …

Dave Thompson told a GOP constituency group that the push for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, as well as an insistence by GOPers that there was a budget surplus both "backfired."
Newly appointed Assistant Senate Minority Leader Dave Thompson, (R-District 58), of Lakeville, who represents the Dakota County precinct of Northfield, debriefed the Republican Seniors of Minnesota last week on the 2012 election and the GOP’s re-election strategy, which he says "backfired." MinnPost reported that Thompson told the constituency group the push for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, as well as an insistence by GOPers that there was a budget surplus, had a negative effect. “I don’t think your average voter perceived that marriage in Minnesota has a problem," he was quoted by MinnPost as saying. Thompson went on, according to the report: “When people wake up and read the paper and they see deficit, deficit, deficit…

Dahle, a DFLer in a tight race with Republican Mike Dudley, has a 71-vote edge after a three-day recount of all the ballots concluded Friday.
After unofficially being named the winner by 78 votes the morning after election day, Kevin Dahle can now officially call himself senator-elect. Dahle, a DFLer in a tight race with Republican Mike Dudley in Senate District 20, won with a 71-vote edge after a three-day recount of all the ballots concluded Friday. The recount added six votes in Dudley's column, while Dahle lost one vote from the election day totals. (Full results below.) On Dec. 4, the elections board will go over the challenged ballots (one by each Dahle and Dudley) and certify the results. Bryan Wells, Dahle's campaign manager, wrote on Facebook on Friday that the six months of campaigning and extra three weeks of waiting was "absolutely worth it." "The recount is over: we…

Voters in the mostly suburban cities Patch covers were more opposed to the proposed gay-marriage ban than Minnesota voters generally.
Here's how residents in a selection of Minnesota cities voted on the ballot measure that would have added a definition of marriage as only between one man and one woman to the state Constitution. Statewide, the ballot measure failed to exceed the 50 percent level of support it needed in the Nov. 6, 2012 general election. It got 47.53 percent, according to unofficial results from all but two of Minnesota's 4,102 precincts' results. Taken together, people in cities served by Patch—mostly in the Twin Cities suburbs—rejected the marriage amendment in greater proportion (61.21 percent) than Minnesotans taken as a whole (52.47 percent). Support for the amendment in places covered by Patch ranged from 14.51 percent in Southwest Minneapolis to 54.…

As of Thursday morning, the Minnesota Secretary of State is reporting that Dudley is 78 votes behind DFLer Kevin Dahle, who was unofficially named the winner of the race.
One day after telling Northfield Patch that he was weighing all his options after being narrowly defeated in the Senate District 20 race, Republican candidate Mike Dudley on Thursday said he'll let the procedure move forward according to state statute. Because the vote totals from Tuesday's election are within one-half of 1 percent of each other (50.03 percent for DFLer Kevin Dahle and 49.84 percent for Dudley), an automatic recount is triggered, according to Minnesota statute. However, according to statute, a losing candidate may waive a recount by filing a written notice of waiver with the canvassing board. As of Thursday morning, the Minnesota Secretary of State is reporting that Dudley is 78 votes behind Dahle, who was unofficially …
Northfield was far from being one of those cities.
Here's how residents in a selection of Minnesota cities voted on the proposed Voter ID amendment to the state Constitution, which would have required photo ID at polling places. Statewide, the ballot measure failed to pass the 50 percent level of support it needed (46.34 percent with all but three Minnesota precincts' results). But if citizens in 14 of these 36 Patch communities had their way, the state Constitution would have a new amendment. Support for the amendment in these cities covered by Patch ranged from 19.30 percent in Southwest Minneapolis to 61.23 percent in St. Michael. (Lake Minnetonka Patch covers several cities, including Minnetrista, Tonka Bay, Wayzata, Mound, Shorewood, Orono, Spring Park, Deephaven, Long Lake and …

well, it's not backwards that we need to look. We need fair taxation which includes taxing the top 2% a bit more. And what's Thompson's thoughts on that? No, he doesn't want that? Who does he cater to...? And democrats always have wanted safe roads and transit. I don't get that for sure.   more ›
