The first two pieces of sidewalk poetry were imprinted in front of the Northfield Public Library on Wednesday morning.

The day has finally come. The first two pieces of sidewalk poetry were imprinted in the sidewalks (one on Third Street and another on Division Street) around the Northfield Public Library on Wednesday morning. They included a piece from Lily Hanlon, a Prairie Creek Community School student, and Anne Running Sovik. These are selections from the first sidewalk public poetry contest from last year, which was sponosred by the Arts & Culture Commission and the Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library. More poems from the 2011 selections will be imprinted at a later date. PHOTOS: Arts a la Carte Feeds the Senses

Northfield High School’s 12th annual arts celebration featured visual, literary, dramatic and performance arts.

For those hungering for the arts, Friday’s Arts a la Carte at Northfield High School provided a feast for the eyes and ears. The 12th annual celebration of Northfield’s high school arts program offered a long list of activities, including face painting and body art, jewelry and print making and clay modeling. For those who wanted to enjoy art rather than make it, there were displays and musical performances. As part of the evening, 22 Northfield High honors art students displayed their work at booths lining the school’s hallways. Cinco de Mayo Options in Northfield

Looking for a tasty way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

A lot of folks are prepared for a long weekend of eating carne asada tacos, drinking ice-cold Modelo beers, and listening to the beautiful sounds of music from Vicente Fernandez and Jose Alfredo Jimenez at their local Cinco de Mayo event. Yet most of those people have no clue what it is they are celebrating on the fifth of May, and no it’s not Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept. 16. Although it has the same ring as the Fourth of July, Cinco de Mayo was not the day the citizens of Mexico declared war against the Spanish colonial government in 1810. The fifth of May is the celebration of El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla) in 1862 where a small group of two thousand peasants under the command of General …

There’s still time this evening to fill your senses with fine art. Northfield High School’s 12th annual Arts a la Carte continues until 8 p.m. today at the high school. During the first hour of the event—which kicked off at 5 p.m.—crowds of Northfield school district students, their parents and residents meandered through the dozens of displays, working student-artists and hands-on arts stations set up in the hallways and cafeteria of the high school. And for those participants requiring a moment of relaxation, students musicians performed orchestral pieces in the lower cafeteria. Admission to this evening’s event is $2. T-shirts also are available for purchase. If you can’t make it to Arts a la Carte, Patch will post a photo gallery on …

Carleton College Alum on New Novel: ‘Possibly My Favorite Book’

The Woodbury author and Carleton College alum's latest novel, “Spilled Blood,” is set to be released Tuesday, May 1.

Woodbury author Brian Freeman’s next novel will hit shelves and online bookstores on Tuesday. It's clear the Carleton College alum is pleased with his latest endeavor, Spilled Blood. “I’m really, really proud of this book,” Freeman told Patch. “It’s possibly my favorite book.” Like his previous efforts, Spilled Blood focuses on psychological suspense. “This is the pinnacle of what I’ve been trying to do in that genre,” Freeman said. The book is set in rural southwestern Minnesota, where two towns are feuding over a chemical manufacturer. Against that backdrop comes a game of Russian roulette that leaves one girl dead, another who runs away, and a third in jail on murder charges. That third girl’s father, Chris Hawk, comes to town from the …

No Shortage of Arts at ARTech

Oliver Twists opens 7:30 p.m. tonight at ARTech.

Visit the Northfield School of Arts and Technology on any given night after most of the 120 students and teachers have headed home and it’s not hard to find Bob Gregory-Bjorklund. Just listen. “Louder! We can’t hear you!” he’ll call out to one of his sheepish middle-school actors. As a director, Gregory-Bjorklund’s actions are on par with anyone who is trying to get the most out of the actors in front him. Though, in this case, he’s got a group of 32 students ranging from sixth grade to seniors. No problem. He’s got it covered. “They’re kids who love to be expressive and are willing to take on challenges," said the ARTech arts coordinator. Call it boot camp. And tonight, the actors go to battle in the school’s iteration of Oliver Twist—not…

Dad, you’ve been through everything, At times your life is tough, But even through the hardest moments, Your love has been enough. You taught me when I was younger, All the lessons I should know, Like who to trust, And who’s a friend and who’s a foe. You’re always a strong person, You help me when I’m off track. You’re jokes are really funny, And you’ve always got my back. You …
