Northfielders Go on a Poetry Parade

Poetry lovers came together on Wednesday to honor 19 poems that have been imprinted in downtown Northfield's sidewalks.

A poem isn't normally read from a distance of 5 feet—or looking straight down.

But on Wednesday night, nearly 50 poetry lovers did just that as part of the 2012 Sidewalk Poetry Celebration.

Poetry enthusiasts came together to honor 18 poems that have been imprinted in sidewalks around downtown Northfield (a 19th poem will be added after Defeat of Jesse James Days).

The group started on where Rob Hardy, one of the poets whose work was selected, read his piece imprinted in the sidewalk. The group then walked around downtown and read the rest of the poems, which were read by either the writer or Philip Spensley, the chair of the Arts and Culture Commission of Northfield.

The ACC received a grant through the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council to support this project. The grants are made possible through Minnesota's Legacy Fund, as appropriated by the Minnesota Legislature.
