Northfield Athletic Club Finds a New Home

After closing on Tuesday, the Northfield Athletic Club has signed a lease for a new facility.

Well, that was quick.

Days after closing the because of at 1000 Hwy. 3 S., owners Jeff and Therese Smiens have signed a lease for a new space, according to the NAC website.

The club will move a few blocks south on Hwy. 3 into the former space of , which moved to Division Street last year.

A whiteboard leaning in the window of the former Anytime Fitness space on Friday says it is the new home of the Northfield Athletic Club, which has been in Northfield since 1980 and the Smiens bought a few years ago.

Smiens said in an email to Patch on Tuesday that Kyle Snesrud, who owns the former building that the Northfield Athletic Club called home for many years, was not able to secure a loan with his bank to make the necessary improvements to the club, which totalled in excess of $80,000, forcing their hand to leave.

"These were not minor repairs but necessary repairs," Smiens wrote. "My wife and I were unwilling to invest any more money in a facility we did not own."

Smiens didn't immediately respond to an email from Patch on Friday. Patch will have more on this as information becomes available.
