Middle School Trip to Eagle Bluff Could See Changes

In this week's video, Superintendent Chris Richardson talks about the district's decision on how to, if at all, continue with its annual Eagle Bluff overnight trip for Northfield Middle School seventh-graders.

In this week's video, Superintendent Chris Richardson talks about the district's decision on how to, if at all, continue with its annual Eagle Bluff overnight trip for Northfield Middle School seventh-graders.

The district is faced with a few larger middle-school classes in the next few years, which presents possible issues with how the trip has been approached in the past. Typically, Richardson said about one-third of students opt out of the trip, but with more students, there still may be too many students for the limited space at Eagle Bluff, an Environmental Learning Center in Lanesboro.

Options discussed at last week's school board meeting include a lottery system, a first-come, first-served approach, and splitting the trip into two trips.

Also, because so many students have typically stayed behind, Richardson said there's some concern if those students are getting a similar enough learning experience from substitute teachers, as well as missing out on relationship and team building opportunities with their teachers and peers.

The school board and district staff will continue its discussion about the trip at its first 2013 meeting on Jan. 14.
