Fire Started at Former Key Building

The building, which is currently unoccupied and slated for demolition, was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived, according to Fire Chief Gerry Franek.

Northfield firefighters responded to a small fire at the former home of the Northfield Union of Youth, 303 Water St., on Tuesday night.

The building, which is currently unoccupied and slated for demolition, was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived, according to Fire Chief Gerry Franek.

Franek said a small paper fire had been started inside a sink in the north section of the two-section building. He said there was evidence that people may have been using the space as a hangout, so it’s unknown at this time if the fire was intentional or accidental.

Last week, firefighters responded to a fire at the Northfield Retirement Community. Deputy Police Chief Chuck Walerius said that incident is believed to be an arson.

Walerius said it's important to capture the person or persons involved in last week's fire.

“One arson usually breeds another and breeds another,” he said. “We want to put an end to anything that might be starting up here. ... It’s not going to be something we tolerate in this city."
