Downtown Northfield is About to Get Uglier

Sisters Ugly to expand and sell niche shoes.

Take that, economy.

Sisters Ugly, a downtown boutique since 2007, is set to expand into new space in its Nutting Block storefront.

It’s not your typical expansion, though.

Mother-and-daughter co-owners Diane Sinclair and Jenny Turek are expanding their contemporary women’s clothing and accessories store across the hallway of their 220 Division St. S. business. It’s a space they’ve rented since moving to the Nutting Block nearly a year ago, but have allowed other folks to use the space temporarily.

Now, they say, is the time to use it themselves—and to bring fashionable and niche shoes to Northfield.

“I think it’s a good complement to what we already have,” said Turek. “It’s a natural progression.”

The two say they’ve always wanted to carry shoes since opening the business in 2007, but said they were following a plan.

First, they wanted to get a storefront on Division Street, which they did a year ago. With business doing well in a time when many Northfield businesses have shuttered, now was the time for them to open the new space.

“We’re learning as we go,” Sinclair said.

The two said they hope the new merchandise brings new clientele to the boutique. The space is small, but large enough to carry a good variety of fashionable footwear.

“I hope if we build it, they will come,” Sinclair said.

For now, Sinclair and Turek will remain the work force behind Sisters Ugly, but said they likely will hire part-time help down the road.

The tandem will have a soft opening this week for the new space, with a grand opening slated for March 12. At that event, which is 10 a.m.-4 p.m., there will be a free giveaway with a shoe purchase.

And the interest in the new selection at is growing, as evident by a woman who stopped and peered inside the space recently.

“They’re really cute,” she said, eyeing a particular pair of heels.

A man also stopped and peeked inside the quaint space.

“Make sure to bring your wife by,” Sinclair said, laughing.
