Here's a look back at Tuesday's Northfield City Council meeting and work session, courtesy of KYMN.

The Council:

  • swore in Jessica Peterson White as the Fourth Ward representative. The appointment was necessary after Patrick Ganey resigned from the council. An election will be held in November 2013 to fill the seat for the remainder of the term, which expires at the end of 2014.
  • revoted and approved a contract 6-0 with Dick's Sanitation. Councilor Betsey Buckheit was absent. The revote was needed after a majority (four votes) didn't vote in support of or against the motion at the Council's Oct. 24 meeting. At its last meeting, the council voted 3-2-1 with Mayor Mary Rossing and Councilors Buckheit and Erica Zweifel voting yes, Councilors Ivan Imm and Rhonda Pownell voting no and Councilor Suzie Nakasian abstaining, citing lack of details about the proposals. Waste Management is the current provider for the city and their services will expire Dec. 31.
  • approved the canvass of votes cast at the Nov. 6, 2012, city general election, which re-elected Zweifel and voted in David Ludescher (At-Large), David DeLong (Second Ward) and Dana Graham (mayor).

So, how much more or less will we be paying for our waste removal? Will we still have single sort? Will we all have to get new garbage cans and recycling cans? Will our pick up schedules change?

From the packet (starting on page 154 of the attached PDF):

Proposals for Basic Residential Service:
WM: $7.83 per month per customer + fuel surcharge over $4 gal
diesel, rates increases 19.3% over the six year life of the contract.
DS: $6.80 - no fuel surcharge, rates increase 13.2 % over the six year
life of the contract
Difference: $1.03/15.1%
Cost difference to the City over the life of the contract = $541,000,
without fuel surcharge, $740,000 with fuel surcharge

 Proposed rates will increase by $2 per month for all container
sizes, except the 96 gal with a $1 increase
 Cost increase to customers will range from 5.2% to 24.7% for base
service
