Laura Virginia Millis Gleason was born August 6, 1921, in Chicago, to Henry Lansing and Laura Baker Millis. She moved with her parents during her early years from Chicago to Detroit to Saint Paul, to Mankato and in 1936 she enrolled at St. Mary’s Hall in Faribault, graduating in 1938.
She received a full scholarship to Mills College in Oakland, California, then transferred to Carleton College in Northfield, and graduated with honors in chemistry in 1942. She was hired to work for the United States Government in the Department of Chemical Warfare, assisting in the war effort while living in New York City. At the conclusion of World War II, she returned to Minnesota, working for the Veterans Administration to resettle returning soldiers in the Twin Cities area.
She then held a position in the Office of Admissions at St. Mary’s Hall in Faribault until she met Charles Read Gleason through mutual friends Marge and Jim Willis. They married in 1950 and made their home in Northfield where they raised five children who survive her.
In the early years of her marriage, Ginnie worked with her husband as business manager for his company. She later began assisting as business manager for the Laura Baker School where her parents were directors that succeeded the school’s founder, Laura B. Baker.
She continued her executive work at the Laura Baker School, helping to form a corporation to insure that its work would endure in perpetuity.
After her retirement, she and Read began spending part of each winter in Palm Springs, a place she grew to love and where her family found ways to visit her often.
Ginnie was a very active member of All Saints Episcopal Church where she held many leadership roles. She was a strong supporter of Christmas Sharing in Northfield, the Humane Society, and any bridge club that would have her.
